What are Bitcoins?
Bitcoins are electronic currency, known online as 'cryptocurrency'. Bitcoins are a form of digital public money that is created by mathematical computations, and policed by millions of computer users called 'miners'.

In other words bitcoins are long strings of code generated by electricity.

Ways to make Bitcoins?

There are many ways to make bitcoins, but not very many effective ways. The most ineffective way I would say was the gambling method, like any type of gambling the host always wins in the end.

Then there is "Bitcoin Mining" where you use your computers GPU or HDD/SDD storage to mine Bitcoins. This is very consuming for your electric bill and will, in most cases, render your PC unusable when the mining client is active. The only effective way to mine coins is if you have a cheap or no electric bill and invest in specialist equipment called ASICS (application-specific integrated circuit). Some of these can prove to be low investment and good return, like the USB versions, ok speeds for cheap consumption.
The best way I have found to see decent progress and see earnings is through Bitcoin Faucets.

My first Faucet was "Easy Bitcoin Faucet". Based on a 10 minute timer I earned certain amounts of Satoshi "satoshi is currently the smallest unit of the bitcoin currency recorded on the block chain".

Then I started to sign up for more Faucet sites until I had an army of them all paying into the same wallet. This is in my opinion is the best way to get bits for free.

Other ways include buying and selling items on bitcoin marketplaces, very effective if you have a product to sell.
